Maximam Election Expenses Decided by Rules:

The total of the expenditure of which account is to be kept under section 77 of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961 and which is incurred or authorized in connection with an election in a State or Union territory mentioned in column 2 of the Table below shall not exceed –

(a) in any one Parliamentary constituency of that State or Union territory, the amount specified in the corresponding column 3 of the said Table; and

(b) in any one Assembly constituency, if any, of that State or Union territory, the amount specified in the corresponding column 4 of the said Table: -

As per a survey report, India is going to expend Rs 10 Thousand Crores in the coming General Election 2009. Let’s compare it with the previous elections. The following statement shows the total expenditure incurred in the revision of electoral rolls and the conducting of Elections to the Lok Sabha, since the First General Elections held in 1952.

Shree, thank you for the valuable information: Indeed the election expenditures is shocking. Our government spend so much for electing our members to do nothing for the welfare of the people. It would be much better to go for developmental works inspite of such collosal expenditures for Election? Imagine what noble works we can do with such a huge expenditures.

The greatest festival of Indian democracy, generally a once-in five- years affair I read somewhere in a research that Indians spent close to Rs.21800 crores to get access to 11 essential services. …. this … and money spent in elections is almost never account for… shows that we have a long way to go as far as governance and economic regulations are concerned. And guess who is in charge of making the regulations…. the very people who are seen handing out doles to public….India is a poor but a progressive country. Inspite of all that we are still facing problems in potable water, education and roads whereas crores of rupees are being spent on elections. The money which should have been utilized for development is being spent on elections.It is unfair to paint a picture where the expenses on an election are portrayed as an economic drain or root of evil. The fact is that this price of our democracy. It is naive to imagine a situation where the elections are held with less funds, white funds or transparent funds. However, if the cost of maintaining the biggest democracy in the world is what it is. Let us not crib. Set back, relax, and enjoy the Dance of Democracy!
