According to the state women’s commission, the tests were conducted on all 152 brides at the Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana held in Shahdol district on June 30. After the tests, 13 girls were sent back because ‘‘they were pregnant’’, says the commission, which has asked the DM to conduct a probe into alleged human rights violations.
‘‘It’s a violation of human rights and dignity of a woman,’’ Amita Chapra, a member of the commission, told TOI on Sunday. ‘‘I have asked the district collector to submit a detailed report within seven days.’’ The commission has asked the district authorities to explain under what rule such a medical test was conducted on the girls and who ordered the tests. The Kanyadan Yojana has so far seen marriages of nearly 90,000 couples in the state.
