Surname of child

Hi,

I am a hindu. About 3.5 years back I married a Muslim boy under the special marriage act. I retained my maiden name after marriage. Now that I have a son, is there any specific law that states that he has to carry a surname from his father - which is the specific norm?? My husband & I are quite liberal & would want him to follow any specific faith he wants when he is mature enough to understand it. I understand for the sake of papers & official certificates, he needs a surname & thus a religion, but cant a mother's surname / religion be given to a child as well??
