What is the rule regarding the number of members from the ruling party in a jpc?

Should the ruling party have more than 60 percent or 50 percent of the total members chosen?"

Quick Summary
A Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is formed by Parliament for specific scrutiny of subjects or bills, comprising members from both Houses and parties. While there's no fixed number of members, their selection is decided by Parliament. The committee is dissolved upon completion of its task or term, and its recommendations are advisory, not binding. The discussion specifically questions the proportion of ruling party members within a JPC, seeking clarity on whether they should constitute over 50% or 60% of the total.

About Joint Parliamentary Committee:

  • A Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is set up by the Parliament for a special purpose, like for the detailed scrutiny of a subject or Bill.
  • It has members from both the Houses and from both the ruling parties and the opposition.
  • Members of the JPC are decided by the Parliament.
  • There is no fixed number of members in the committee.
  • It is dissolved after its term ends or its task has been completed.
  • The recommendations made by the committee are in recommendatory in nature not binding on the government.

A 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has been established to review the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The committee will comprise 21 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha.
