Registration of marriage _whether compulsory

Under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, registration is not compulsory. Marriage validity depends solely on the performance of essential ceremonies (Section 7), not on a registration certificate. Registration merely facilitates proof; its absence does not invalidate the union. Without registration, a woman can prove her marriage through wedding photographs, video recordings, witness testimonies, joint bank accounts, official IDs listing each other as spouses, and the strong legal presumption arising from long-term cohabitation. Even in states with compulsory registration rules, non-registration is an administrative lapse, not a ground to declare the marriage invalid. Courts reaffirm that registration is evidentiary, not foundational.

The issue is :

A lower income family in our locality (consisting Husband &wife both from Midnapur) , husband got a blue coller job in dubai through agency. The agency told him his wife can accompany with him but proof of marriage is required. As the family belongs to rural area of Mednipure their marriage was not registered.Further the lady's title in Adhar Card is not yet changed.

Hence the query related to registration of marriage was raised by me.
