Validity of overseas marriage

I am a Hindu domiciled in the USA (living here for 15 years though am an Indian citizen). I married another Hindu who is a US citizen and has been living here in California for 20 years. The marriage was in California and was a full traditional Hindu ceremony.

We have not yet registered the marriage legally here. So technically we are not married as of now.

Now, a ceremony like this in India constitutes a legal wedding as per the Hindu Marriage Act.

Does this act extend to weddings outside India? Can we claim that we had a legal wedding as per the Hindu Marriage Act?

Can anyone help with this please? If you are a lawyer, I am ready to pay you.

Thanks!
