Joining PhD after leaving current job

hi

I have joined a private Engineering Institute on 15 june 2010. They did not give any appointment letter at the time of joining and give joining on some rough document which contained no terms and conditions. I have joined PhD program in Central Govt. Institute on 15 Sept 2010 but dont give any notice period to my previous employer. On 17 sept 2010 I send my resignation by registered post. They are not relieving my salary of 45 days. When I asked them to relieve the salary they are asking that if they send a letter to my current Institute than my joining in PhD will be cancelled.

Can my joining in PhD be cancelled by this type of letter?

Can I claim for my Salary without affecting my current joining?

1. No, after your resignation, this will be of no effect.

2, Yes, you can, as it relates to your previous employment.
