Stealing Electricity and Meter Tampering is dangerous. It can cause a lot of damage to a Residence. From starting a fire if the wires are not properly placed, to causing the death of an innocent person.Bring the notice to the electricity department to escape the penalities etc.

Hello sir, greetings of the day.
As per your query, there are many laws available for electricity theft and tampering of electric meter. The below mentioned Sections are provided under The Electricity Act 2003.
Section 136- this gives the punishment when the theft of electric materials or lines occurs. It states that whenever a person takes the possession of wire, or carries away the wire or tamper with the electric wire or uses the wire without permission of the supplier he will be liable for punishment with imprisonment which may extend till 5 years or with fine or both.
Section 137- This gives the punishment for receiving stolen property. It states that if a person dishonestly receives any stolen electric material or wire, then he can be liable to Imprisonment which may exceed up to 3 years, or, Fine, or Both.
Section 138- It gives the punishment for having a mala fide intention. It states that whenever a person with a bad intention makes a connection, reconnection, fixes or tampers the wire or electric material without the consent of the supplier, then he can be punished with imprisonment which should not exceed  3 years or fine.
Section 140- This section gives the penalty for intentionally causing harms to works. It states that whoever intentionally cuts off the electricity or tampers with the electricity work or supply shall be punishable with a maximum fine of Rs 10000.
So if you honestly did not know about the tampering of the electricity wire while purchasing the house and if you can successfully prove your innocence, then you won’t be convicted. The previous house owner will be.
Hope this helps you.
