To add your name as a joint owner to a property currently registered solely in your wife's name, you cannot simply add a name to an existing deed. It requires executing a registered Gift Deed transferring a 50% share of the property to you.
Banks require the titleholder (your wife) to be a borrower or co-borrower on the loan because the property serves as security/mortgage. Your wife will be the Primary Borrower (since she owns the property). You can join as a Co-Borrower / Co-Applicant. Banks actually encourage this because adding your income increases the total loan eligibility.
Complete the Gift Deed first so you are both co-owner and co-borrower before applying for the loan.
