Democracy

Page no : 2

Vineet (Director)     26 October 2009

Dear Friends, I am really surprised when I find such views on a respectable forum like this. The contributors are from a highly educated and esteemed legal fraternity whose views have shaped the thought process and destiny of this country and will do so in future.

Who says there is no democracy in this country? If we all are freely venting our anger through this forum, it is only because we have democratic syetem of governance. Please search internet and try to find any such forum based in China, North Korea or Cuba. Just because of some black sheeps, can the entire herd be discarded.  Even in matured democracies such as USA and UK, there have been instances of moral terpitude.

CORRUPTION finds its roots in basic human behaviour and not the political system. It was there during the reigns of Chanakya (Remember his famous honeybee theory), during medival society and there are examples of blatent corruption in modern times in all countries, polities and societies. In Japan, which is a pure democratic country, no government has been able to complete its tenure only because of crruption charges.

We are fond of giving examples of development of China. Dear Sirs, China is not only Shanghai, Guanzou or Beizing. It is much more than that. How one would justify recent massacare of Ulgers which stems from vast economic inequality between Northern and Central provinces. More than 70% of China is reeling under acute povery and disparity. The only problem is that we see, hear or read what there communist government wants us to.

The countries who have remained laggards in today's world are those which are either or at some point of time in recent past were under Dictator, Communist or Anarchists rule. All democratic countries have made progress in the fields of economics, science, human life and liberty be it Asian, European or American. The suufering countries of Asia (Read Afghanistan, Pakistan, North Korea), Europe (Read Romania, Checkoslovakia, earstwhile Soviet countries), South America (Read Cuba, Panama etc), Africa (Most of them barring a few) have never tasted the freedom of true democracy.

Coming back to our own country, there are problems which are to be addressed and corrected by us only. By no way we should discredit our democratic system for our own fallacies. It is democracy only which allows people of humble origin like Manmohan Singh, Lal Bahadur Shastry and for that matter Lalu Yadav and Mayavati to become our top leader without any sort of coup or armed revolution. So what if some of them got corrupted during the process. They have been shown the door by the same masses who elected them. Sukhram got his dues and Madhu Koda will also pay for his follies.

In my humble view, we should channelize our energy towards strengtheing our democratic institutions in whatever limited capacity we can. The enlightened and educated class has to take initiative in this direction.

Lalu Yadav and Mayawati became leaders. When Lau felt the heat, his wife became he leader. They come from humble beginning and then become multi-millionaire. Does democracy allow these corrupt men to become leaders? Raj Thakare's partymen openly beat North Indian on the streets of Nashik, Thane, Aurangabad and Mumbai. Non-bailable warrant is issued against him which Mumbai police dare not execute. Let his men go to Vidhan Sabha. The drama will start there and we shall have the taste of democracy. Democracy in India is confined to armchair discussion in the drawing room of affluent people.

I value your suggestion. Let us agree to disagree.
