If you have complained to banks you must have had some proof. Go through the proofs you have.Is it a criminal or civil defamation? Consult a legal expert on their acceptability and strength. If you then conclude that you can face the defamation suit go ahead. Else backout. One basic defense for you in this case is that you can prove your allegations to be correct. But remember, he can still sue you even if you withdraw your complaint from banks and apologize. Make sure he commits in written not to sue you later as well. On a personal note do a cost-benefit analysis. Better withdraw it.
