GENERAL ELECTIONS-2009 Backgrounder -16

 

In the General Election 2004, there were 15 constituencies out of total 543 where the winners could only secure less than 30% of the total valid votes polled in their respective constituencies.

 

All these 15 Members of the Lok Sabha who secure less than 30% of valid votes polled in their respective constituencies belonged to the Northern State of Uttar Pradesh.

 

The record of securing lowest number of valid votes polled (percentage-wise) by winning candidate is in the name of Mohanlal Ganj constituency where the victorious candidate was polled only 25.98% of the total valid votes polled.

 

Other low-percentage constituencies in Uttar Pradesh include: Robertsgnaj where the winning candidate was polled 26.15% of total valid votes polled, in Padrauna the winner got 26.18% of the total valid votes polled, in Aligarh 26.38%, in Farrukhabad 26.47% and similarly, in Basti, the winner got 26.93% of total valid votes polled.

 

Other constituencies like Mirzapur (27.74%), Ghosi (27.92%), Bansgaon (28.54%), Aonla (28.58%), Sitapur (28.79%), Chandauli (29.05%), Jhansi (29.13%), Salempur (29.21%) and Hapur (29.40%) did only marginally better.
