Yes. In India, an Unmarried/Single Status Certificate can be obtained through the competent SDM or court having jurisdiction over the applicant's residential address, subject to the applicable procedure.

The Ministry of External Affairs also recognises an affidavit/declaration authenticated by the SDM for single-status purposes, particularly where the document is required for use abroad.

However, an Unmarried Certificate and a Relationship Certificate are two different documents.

For a relationship between two consenting unmarried adults, a joint notarised affidavit/declaration can generally be prepared recording their relationship and mutual consent. However, this should not be confused with a government-issued Relationship Certificate, as there is no universally prescribed certificate of this nature.

The appropriate documentation depends on the intended purpose.

One important clarification: Is the certificate required for:

  1. Marriage registration abroad?

  2. Visa or immigration purposes?

  3. Establishing a live-in relationship?

  4. Personal or legal documentation within India?

The purpose will determine the appropriate authority and documentation required.
