The lawyer representing the two main accused in the kidnap and murder of a Koyambedu-based biriyani shop owner claimed on Thursday that a sub-inspector of police had triggered the whole sequence of events leading to the crime.
B Pachaimuthu, counsel for Robin and his wife Sheeba, said that Robin had come to know about the SI's involvement with the slain biriyani shop owner, Mohammad Hakeem, just before Hakeem breathed his last. "Robin had made a detailed statement to the police during his arrest. We will obtain the statement through the court and if it is noticed that it does not include all the parts, including the part about the policeman's involvement, we will file a case in court to get it included," Pachaimuthu said.
According to police sources, the SI had met Sheeba once and tried to speak to her on a later occasion. However, she did not respond. The SI finally, the sources said, entered into an indecent proposal with the deceased Hakeem to get a date with her. Hakeem, who the police said knew Sheeba well, bought a mobile connection with forged documents and began to continuously send obscene text messages to her. "Even though Sheeba received the messages for a while, she and her husband failed to lodge a complaint with the local police. They devised a plan to catch Hakeem and discipline him on their own but the matter went out of hand and the victim died in their custody," Robin's relative Samuel said.
Hakeem's body was found on a railway track near the Arakkonam railway station on Tuesday, after he was kidnapped from Anna Nagar and beaten to death at a lodge in Vadapalani. Three of the five accused Sheeba (30), her husband Robin and their driver Satya (29) were arrested on Wednesday while Sheeba's relatives Rajasekhar and Ravi are absconding.
