The Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 (ITPA)—originally called the Suppression of Immoral Traffic in Women and Girls Act—was enacted to combat human trafficking for s*xual exploitation in India. It was passed in response to the UN Convention of 1950 on the suppression of trafficking and prostitution exploitation.

Key Objectives Prevent trafficking of persons, especially women and children, for commercial s*xual exploitation. Regulate and penalize activities associated with prostitution, such as brothel-keeping, pimping, and soliciting.

Salient Features Prostitution itself is not illegal, but activities surrounding it—like operating brothels or soliciting in public—are punishable. Defines terms like brothel, prostitution, child, minor, and protective home3. Establishes Special Police Officers and Trafficking Police Officers to investigate offences. Empowers magistrates to rescue victims, evict offenders, and order rehabilitation.

What are the facts? What is the context?  What is the query?

T. Kalaiselvan, Advocate (Advocate)     26 July 2025

The Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956, is a piece of Indian legislation aimed at preventing the commercialization of vice and trafficking of females. It defines and criminalizes activities related to prostitution, including keeping or managing a brothel, procuring or inducing someone for prostitution, and prostitution near certain public places.

What is your query in this regard?
