Inventors and Scientist are doing lot of innovation and research. At this point of time, they would like to know how and when to do perform patent search for protecting their invention and they may not know what the information required for doing the patent search.

Basically, the patent search can be performed before filing or after filing the patent application. However, doing the patent search to validate the patentability before filing the patent application is a good idea. In order to perform the patent search, the inventor has to provide all sufficient information to the patent service provider. Most of the service provider has the invention disclosure form to submit all the information of invention. Before submitting, ensure to enter in the Non-disclosure agreement with the service provider. For performing patent search, it may costs around Rs. 20,000 to 30,000; however it is insignificant as compare the cost involved in patent drafting, filing and obtaining patent.

In common a practice, patent service provider advices to start with a search, file a provisional patent application and then file non-provisional patent application within 12 months.
