I am a tenant with family in a flat at Virugambakkam, Chennai since 2 years. The tenancy started with a 11 month agreement after which it was not renewed. Rent is being paid regularly. Now the landlord has verbally asked me to vacate the flat as he wants to sell the same. I have agreed to vacate soon and searching for a new flat. Meanwhile, the owner is presurrising me to vacate immediately as he has found a buyer. The notice period mentioned in the rental agreement was 2 months; the agreement was not renewed after 11 months. What is the normal notice period ? Can the owner serve a notice on me to vacate the flat within a few days ? What are my rights and if served with a legal notice, what should I do ? I am hopeful of vacating within about a month.
