Question regarding the legal metrology act, 2009

Please excuse my legal ineptitude, since I have no law background.

My question is thus:

The section 35 reads:

"Whoever renders or causes to be rendered, any service through means other than the weight or measure or numeration or in terms of any weight, measure or number other than the standard weight or measure, shall be punished with fine which shall not be less than two thousand rupees but which may extend to five thousand rupees and for the second or subsequent offence, with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than three months but which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both. "

Section 7 clearly mentions that:

"(1) The base units of weights and measures specified in section 5 shall be the standard units of weights and measures. "

Section 5 mentions:

"(1) The base unit of –

(i) length shall be the metre; "

My question is, does this imply that dealing with goods' dimensions in terms of inches or feet mean you are committing an offence under Section 35? I think not. But I am unable to understand its meaning otherwise.

Yes you are right.

Inches, feet, gallon, pound, horsepower etc cannot be used legally in India.

But always the metric units are used in written transaction like bills receipts etc,
