Course fee

student A enrolls in a coaching class paying 40% of the entire fees, attends about 4 classes and has been given appropriate material and then discontinues the course. Is student A in any way obliged to pay the remaining fees if the institute keeps asking for it?

Yes, Institute can claim balance amount.  The Institute has to adjust the 40% amount to the classes he had attended and material/books he had obtained and the remaining amount is any can be claimed from him by filing a civil suit.

It would depend upon the conditions stipulated by the Institute at the time of joining. Generally if the student fails to join the institute after paying the advance, the advance or a part of it can be forfeited. If the student attends a few classes and then leaves, the institute can claim the remaining 60%
