caste certificate

Father belongs to oc and mother belongs to bc. She is 2nd wife and the child grew up with mother only.so now can child take mother caste

I read somewhere that child can take any father/mother caste in intercaste but he should suffer all the disadvantages of the caste since childhood.....is it correct
