Police-Rank- Badge

 

 

 Article 246 of the constitution allots the police force as state subject. The structure and administration of the state police force is controlled by State government according to Police act. Head of the police force in each state is Director General of Police (DGP) (Badge -Crossed sword, Baton, and state Emblem), who is responsible to the state government for the administration of police force in each state. Each state is divided into Zones .Inspector General of Police (IGP) is the head of each Zone. (Badge –Crossed sword, Baton, 1 star).Zones is again divided into Ranges. Each Range comes under the head of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DyIGP) (Badge –State Emblem and 3 stars). Group of districts form Ranges. Superintendent of Police is the head of the District (SP) (Badge -state Emblem and one star).In bigger districts Senior Superintendent of police is the head. Districts again divided into sub divisions. These subdivisions were controlled by Additional Superintendent of police (State Emblem), Assistant / Deputy Superintendent of Police (Three Star). In between Subdivisions and police stations there are Police Circles in some places. It is under the control of Inspector of Police (three star and a ribbon half inch in  width half red and half blue, worn  horizontally, red color ribbon facing the stars) .Police stations are formed as the unit of police force in each state. The officer in charge of police station is an Inspector of police. Police stations are allotted according to area, population and volume of crime. In rural area Sub Inspector of police is in charge of police station (two stars and a ribbon half inch in width, half red and half blue, worn horizontally, red color ribbon facing the stars). Assistant Inspector of Police (one star, and a ribbon half inch in width, half red and half blue, worn horizontally, red color ribbon facing the star) Head Constables and Police Constables (three stripes on the upper part of the arm sleeves) are staffs in a police station.
