First issue a legal demand notice to your father in law asking him to return the money, that itself will indicate the consequences that may arise in future in this connection and also he chances for retrieving your money from him. Is the relationship between you both still cordial or soared?

i presume you advanced money by cheque . issue legal notice to FIl to return money advanced as loan
