OVERVIEW

  • On the 1st of February, 2021, a military coup took place in Myanmar.
  • During that, the democratically elected Aung San Suu Kyi government was overthrown by the military.
  • Following that, many protesters and demonstrators took to the streets protesting against the military coup and the military government.
  • The people are asking for the release of Aung San Suu kyi who was taken into detention when the coup happened.

WHAT IS THE STATUS QUO?

  • While the military government had claimed that they had the support of the people, the people of Myanmar are taking to the streets in large numbers to show their rejection of the claim.
  • The laws protecting the freedom of the citizens have been rolled back by the military government and till date 384 people have been detained.
  • The government workers including the civil servants and the staff of the railways have refused to work and have joined the protest.
  • Soldiers have been deployed in various parts of Myanmar.
  • The military coup in Myanmar is being widely condemned in the International community.
