The Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to allot common election symbols to Chiranjeevis Praja Rajyam party and two other political parties in the south as an interim arrangement. Popular Telugu film star Chiranjeevis Praja Rajyam party will get railway engine as the symbol while DMDK, a Tamil Nadu based political party, will get drum and third political party, Lok Satta, has been allotted whistle as the election symbol. A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam, however, made it clear that these parties were not entitled to any preferential treatment as they have created no equity in their favour and it was purely an interim arrangement. The Commission will be free to proceed in accordance with law when the issue for allotment of regular election symbol arises, the bench noted. Earlier, counsel for these registered unrecognised political parties contended before the court that the Commission has illegally rejected their application for allotment of common election symbols and these parties intended to contest all Lok Sabha and Assembly seats in their respective states.
