The security threat to the Karnataka High Court appears to have been taken seriously at last by the city police which on Monday deployed 12 gunmen armed with sophisticated SLR rifles to patrol its grounds. The gunmen will check every vehicle entering the court premises, including those of advocates and their clients on every trip they make to it. The city police has appealed to the advocates’ forum and the high court employees to co-operate with it in strengthening the court’s security. The measures are seen as necessary following the recent terror attacks in the state and country, and the bomb blast at the Hubli court, Assistant commissioner of police (high court security) M.K. Murali said besides the 12 new SLR, the department had also sanctioned three new advanced metal detectors for the court, which would be installed in its eastern section. “In fact we had asked for 18 SLRs, but were given 12. The new guns can pump in at least 20 bullets using both automatic and manual options,” Mr Murali explained, speaking to Deccan Chronicle. Presently, over 50 policemen provide security at the high court, which would like more men to be deployed on its grounds. The new SLR which has been provided to the gunmen will make their response to any kind of terrorist attack faster. Also referred to as a semi-automatic rifle, the SLR replaces the old .303 rifles which took time to reload and shoot, making it impossible for gunmen to respond with any speed. “The terrorists involved in all recent attacks have used highly sophisticated weapons. In the Mumbai attacks, if the police had been equipped with advanced weapons, fewer numbers would have died. At least now we have the SLRs guns, which is some consolation,” said a policeman on duty at the high court.
