Election petition of Shiromani Akali Dal candidate dismissed

The Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed the petition filed by the defeated Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate, Amarjit Singh Sidhu, against the Congress candidate, Jeet Mohinder Singh, who was declared elected from Talwandi Sabo constituency in the 117-member Punjab Vidhan Sabha in the February 2007 general elections. The petitioner had sought the directions to set aside the outcome of the election alleging the Congress candidate had obtained the support of the religious leader of Dera Sacha Sauda and had committed a corrupt practice, thereby violating the provisions of Representation of the Peoples Act. Mr Sidhu had also accused the respondent Mr Singh of leveling false allegations of amassing properties against him. The petitioner, a close relative of state chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, had served the state Excise and Taxation department before he was appointed a member of the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC). Mr Sidhu was defeated by a margin of over 3900 votes by Mr Singh (Cong) who was returned for his second successive term in 2007. However, in 2002 general elections, he won from this constituency as an independent candidate but later joined the Congress. While dismissing the petition, Justice Vinod Kumar Sharma observed it does not disclose any cause of action and no tri-able issue was made out. UNI
