Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court A P Shah inaugurated the evening courts at Tees Hazari, Rohini and Dwarka sports complex. Evening courts at Patiala House and Karkardooma courts were inaugurated by Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan on Nov 12, 2008. In order to get over with the burden de to heavy pendency of cases, particularly under the section 138 of Negotiable Instruments Act, an initiative has been taken by judiciary in dealing with those cases where cheque amount is upto Rs 25,000 and complainant is a financial institution. At present, there are 20 evening courts across all the district courts of Delhi which function from 1700 hrs to 1900 hrs and the cases are settled by mutual consent. The evening courts have successfully resolved 1400 cases in the first two months of its opening. Presently, 25 cases are assigned to each court daily which is to be increased daily. An evening court is a step that enables maximum utilisation of the existing infrastructure and greatly reduces the case load in the courts of the magistrate. Justice Shah, while interacting with the judicial officials, said soon more petty cases, where there was only provision of fine, would also be sent to these courts.
