NEWS PROCCEDINGS

• PS Narasimha is among the judges promoted by the Supreme Court and is also expected to become Chief Justice, as he is the third highest-ranking lawyer in the legal profession.
• Senior Advocate Pamidighantam Sri Narasimha will be sworn in as a Supreme Court judge on August 31, 2021. He will become the ninth Supreme Court judge of India prior to his retirement in May 2028.
• According to the seniority rotation, Narasimha will serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India from October 30, 2027 to May 2028.
• According to Article 124 of the Constitution of India, a person can be appointed as a Supreme Court judge if he
(a) has served as defence counsel in a High Court or in two or more courts for at least ten years, or
(b) In the eyes of the President, most of the promotions to the Supreme Court of an outstanding jurist occurred in category (a).
• To date, no prominent jurist (category (b)) has been appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court.
• The appointments of the following judges fall into category (b).
• Interestingly, since 2014, there has been an increase in the number of people appointed directly by the Bar Association. Between 1950 and 2014, only four judges were appointed directly from the Bar Association.

BRIEF BACKGROUND ON MR. NARASIMHA

• Narasimha served as an Additional Solicitor General of the Supreme Court of India from May 2014 to December 2018 in India and represented the government in important cases related to the Italian Marine Corps case. He opined on the constitutional validity of criminal defamation and the NJAC case related to the appointment of judges.
• Previously, the Supreme Court appointed him as a mediator to resolve disputes related to the management of the Cricket Control Council of India (BCCI). He also appeared in court for some parties in the Ayodhya case.
