What Did The Supreme Court Say

  • On Tuesday, June 1, 2021, the Supreme Court Bench, which consisted of Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice M R Shah, recorded that 95% of the cases filed were frivolous in nature.
  • The system was becoming increasingly dysfunctional because of such cases.
  • Justice D Y Chandrachud further added that the Courts already have cases pending which are of national importance.

What Is The Issue At Hand

  • The above statement was made while dismissing a plea about a consumer dispute.
  • The main concern, as pointed out by Justice D Y Chandrachud, was that the Suo-Motu Order on COVID-19 was not complete.
  • The said Order had not been dictated and uploaded on time.
  • The reason for such delay had been frivolous cases, which had to be looked into while more important cases of national importance remained pending.

Other Remarks

  • The Justices also requested lawyers and advocates to respect the sanctity of the institution.
  • Wastage of time was also the wastage of taxpayer’s money.
  • Regarding the plea petition, Justice D Y Chandrachud remarked that the matter had been already disposed of and was settled.
  • Bringing up applications again and again was a waste of the Court’s time, and hence refused to hear the case.
