The Centre has directed all the States/Union Territories to enforce the Supreme Court directive, under the Motor Vehicle Act, of fixing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) for all vehicles forthwith to check their theft by criminals.

In a letter to the chief secretaries/administrators, the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry’s Secretary Brahm Dutt said violation of the court directive amounts to contempt of the court and hence immediate measures to enforce the rule.

The HSRP system was first introduced in Meghalaya and later Sikkim, and Nagaland joined them apart from Goa.

The directive gained significance in view of the staunch opposition from the private transporters and political parties, including the ruling Congress, against fixing of the plates at exorbitant cost.

The transporters had almost paralysed the system yesterday, by observing one day token strike demanding resignation of the transport minister Ramakrishna Davalikar, representing MGP in the coalition government.
