Tenant Vs Landlord

I have given a house in rent in my land. The tenant was not documented in any kind of agreement. He is staying with us from last 2 years. But from last 10 months he is not paying rent so I had asked him to vacate the place 2 months earlier but he gives excuses all the time. What is the process by which I can vacate my rent house or should I lock it.

send him a notice to vacate the premises within a timeframe as you need the property for your bonafide personal use.if he is not still vacating you can file a eviction petition in the court

Thanks, also would like to know how can I recover the unpaid rent, also will he be penalizied with compensation?
