Meaning of race

Dear Members

Please Elaborate the Term “Race” given in Article 15 of the Indian Constitution. What this term will include? Please give some example.

According to 'American Heritage Dictionary',Race is defined as-

1. A group of people identified as distinct from other groups because of supposed physical or genetic traits shared by the group. Most biologists and anthropologists do not recognize race as a biologically valid classification, in part because there is more genetic variation within groups than between them.

2. A group of people united or classified together on the basis of common history, nationality, or geographic distribution: the Celtic race.

3. A genealogical line; a lineage.

4. Humans considered as a group.

According to 'Collins Cobuild Dictionary' race is defined as-

A race is one of the major groups which human beings can be divided into according to their physical features,such as color of their skin.

According to 'Concise Law Dictionary' race is defined as-

Tribe,nation or people regarded as common stock;one of the greatest divisions of mankind having certain physical peculiarities in common

Therefore,we can conclude that Ordinarily 'Race' means and includes 'People having certain common physical features'
