Juristic distinction between a set-off and a counter-claim?

What is the main juristic distinction between a set-off and a counter-claim?

Can the debtor seek his counter claim to be decided as an independent suit? Or seek transfer of his Counter claim to DRT in a counter claim that exceeds ten lakhs?

Counter claim is an opprtunity for you to resist the claim of the plaintiff so it is always tried with the main suit as a counter suit.

If you want go the DRT you have to file a fresh suit.
