Father and mother marriage certificate

My parents were married in the 80s. Is it necessary for my parents to have a marriage certificate for any future reasons. Should I take them both to a register office for a marriage certificate? My parents say it is not needed since there are lots of evidences of the marriage like photos, videos, ration card etc.

it is not mandatory for them to get their marriage registered. Now every marriage needs to be registered.

Registration of your parents' marriage is not necessary at this stage.  Why do you ask this question now?  Do you require the same for immigration purpose if you intend to take them to a foreign country ?  If the visa sanctioning authorities insist on it, you may obtain an affidavit duly notarised which will solve the purpose.
