The following article gives a glimpse of interview for any legal internship and some tips to successfully go ahead with them. It also contains a brief about different types of internships available with law students.

What is it: Law Internship?

Law internships teach us the legal world's intricacies, because one may have to work in tandem with the other lawyers. They help an aspirant in gaining a little practical perspective in this regard that may in future help these prospective lawyers to work properly and gain enough experience to work towards their educational and financial betterment and advancement of the country as well. There are different kinds of law internships for reference.

• Research Internship

As a law student always remember that internship is important but more important is what kind of internship you are doing. One very strong talent you need to possess to be a good lawyer is-Research Skill.

• Law Firm Internship

The responsibilities of a legal intern vary according to the needs of the firm and the level of experience of the applicant, but usually include basic office work such as filing, legal study, client assistance, and paperwork and court planning assistance to lawyers.

• Corporate Internship

It is the most important branch of law as it offers an in-depth overview of the problems in the business sector that are of great concern to the members employed in this area. In several ways, a corporate internship helps one student.

• Work for an independent lawyer

If you want a near working environment and you want to know the art of courtroom, you need to do this internship.

• Subject matter-specific internship

That refers to an internship in which the aspirant's interest rests. A lot of students choose to do field-specific internships such as Sports Law, Real Estate Law, Tax Law, IPR, Banking Law etc.

How to: Interview for a legal internship

An internship needs a lot of planning. First of all, the success of the aspirant in academia should be impressive. Although good grades may not automatically attract the interviewees' attention, poor scores will certainly be questioned upon. Third, since the aspirant might have to be in close touch with customers of the company or the clients. So, one might need to brush up the social skills and make sure during the interview that's clear.

Majority of the questions are based on the training provided by the college. Interviewing questions also include a peek into the candidates' future goals, expectations and performance. Following are the interview questions that a law intern can expect to be asked during the interview.

General Questions:

  • Tell us about yourself/Give us a short introduction on yourself.
  • What law school did you graduate from? Inform us all about your organization.
  • How would you characterize your course / curriculum pattern? Have you acquired some hand-on experience over the course?
  • Did you participate actively in some event? Talk to us about them. What have you heard from them?
  • How well do your skills match your grades?

Self-Assessment Review:

• Where do you think is your greatest strength? Why? For what?
• What is your weakest point? How are you going to tackle that?
• What do you enjoy most about being an attorney?
• What do you really fear about being a lawyer?
• What has been your greatest accomplishment to date?
• What was your greatest mistake until now?
• Tell me about a project you had to do during your degree programme. Which contributions did you make to that?

How essential is it during an internship interview to have knowledge about the field of law you want to enter?

The answer is that having knowledge of the area of law that they have chosen as a career path is extremely important for one. Within this area one should have knowledge not only of the theoretical aspects but also of practical aspects.[1]

Concluding, whether the aspirant is an undergraduate or current law student, having won a legal internship is a win. An internship is their best networking opportunity, which can be a major booster for their resume. Nonetheless, if one does not always behave with dignityhe or she will do more harm than good to themselves.

An internship, on the whole, is like a big audition. The aspirant's legal experience matters, but so does his conduct. One should use their internship as an opportunity to brighten up and earn the networking and job opportunities for the best interns.
