NON BAILABLE WARRANTS AGAINST SHO

Wednesday 19th August 2009

CHANDIGARH:

Taking serious note of misbehaviour by cops with a high court warrant officer, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday issued non-bailable warrants against Kharar SHO Sarabjeet Singh. Justice Rajan Gupta issued warrants against the SHO on account of non-compliance of the court directions. A single bench of the high court had earlier directed the SHO to remain present in person before the bench on August 18, but he failed to turn up.

The judge issued these directions on the habeas corpus petition filed by Hardeep Singh, a resident of Punjab. In the petition Singh had alleged that one of his relatives was illegally detained in the Kharar police station. During the hearing, the high court had appointed a warrant officer, who on directions from the court visited Kharar police station. Though the warrant officer did not find the detainee in police

lock-up, the SHO and other cops allegedly misbehaved with him and locked him inside the police station. The warrant officer submitted a report to the court about the same. Taking strong note of the report, the court had issued a contempt notices to the SHO directing him to explain as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him.
