NEW DELHI, June 5: To prevent character assassination of child victims like Aarushi Talwar by investigating agencies in future, the women and child development (WCD) ministry intends to tighten existing legal provisions and even draft a new law if required. As a step in this direction, the WCD minister, Ms Renuka Chowdhury, today held a meeting with lawyers, law ministry officials, NGOs and members of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). The possibility of suggesting changes in training programme for police personnel so that they are more sensitive to gender and child issues was also explored at the meeting. The minister said she was in favour of effecting changes in child laws so that police personnel who tarnish the image of child victims like 14-year-old Aarushi don’t go unpunished. n SNS
