Chennai: Seeking to free the city police from political shackles, the Madras high court made it clear that there should not be interference from any political quarter in the probe into the November 12 campus clash at the Dr Ambedkar Government Law College. The first bench comprising chief justice A K Ganguly and justice F M Ibrahim Kalifulla, passing interim orders on a batch of public interest writ petitions filed by concerned advocates, said investigation into the violence must go on in right earnest. “By giving this direction, this court means that the investigation must be expedited and its logical conclusion must be reached. The police must not show any slackness in this matter. The court makes it clear that if anyone has any grievance in matters of administration by police, over such grievances, redress can only be made judicially. There should not be any interference from any political sources in the investigation by the police,” the bench observed. Perhaps taking a cue from the court’s caustic observations on Tuesday, the new commissioner of police told the court on Thursday that students involved in earlier as well as the November 12 case would be arrested. “Steps have been taken to arrest all the accused concerned in various cases involving law college students, earlier as well as in the present case,” said commissioner K Radhakrishnan in his counter-affidavit. He said a total of four cases were registered by the Esplanade police since November 12, and 27 students had been remanded to judicial custody. Elaborating, the commissioner said on the complaint of an injured student Ayyathurai, 21 students have been arrested and six others had surrendered. Another injured student, Chithirai Selvan, too has lodged a complaint, citing Bharathi Kannan and Arumugam as accused. As both these students are undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit in the Government General Hospital, they are yet to be arrested, the commissioner said.
