HC seeks information on implementation of Juvenile Justice Act Imphal | Friday, Mar 6 2009 IST The Gauhati High Court today issued a notice of motion returnable within four weeks in a PIL seeking appropriate direction for effective implementation of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000. A division bench comprising Justice Maibam Binoykumar Singh and Justice A C Upadhyay issued the said notice of motion following a PIL filed by Wahengbam Joykumar, a progressive social activist. The petitioner contended that on December 30, 2000, the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, had been enacted by the Parliament, thereby replacing the pre-existing Juvenile Justice Act, 1986. Under this new enactment the respondents required to establish various statutory bodies and institutions for effective implementation of the Act, sources said. On June 21 last, the petitioner had submitted a representation to the state Law Secretary, thereby requesting him to appoint the required number of Principal Magistrates of the Juvenile Justice Boards, which are already constituted under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000. -- (UNI) -- 06CA51.xml
