The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the anticipatory bail application of Delhi Police head constable Vijay Bahadur, accused of extorting nearly Rs 20 lakh and letting off an aide of the alleged kidney racket kingpin Amit Kumar. A vacation bench of Justices Arijit Pasayat and G S Singhvi rejected the head constable's plea that the police were forced to register cases against him and other co-accused policemen due to media pressure. The apex court directed Bahadur to surrender before a court and seek regular bail in the matter. Vijay Bahadur is one of the six police personnel accused of extorting nearly Rs 20 lakh from Upendra, a close aide of Amit Kumar, to let him off following a raid at a Gurgaon hospital where illegal organ transplants were taking place. According to police, Bahadur was one of the two head constables in the six-member Delhi Police team headed by ASI Ravinder Singh which conducted the so-called raid in January, a month before the scandal surfaced. Besides Ravinder Singh, two constables Rakesh Kumar and Naresh Kumar have been arrested in the case. However, Bahadur and two others continue to be at large. The police claimed that the racket could have been detected much earlier if the accused policemen would have arrested the culprits during the raid. The team led by ASI Ravinder Kumar Singh had raided the clinic, from where Kumar was operating, and allegedly picked up Upendra on 7th January. The policemen let Upendra go after he allegedly paid them Rs 19.85 lakh as bribe.
