The Supreme Court granted six weeks time to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati to respond to the affidavit filed by the CBI seeking its permission to file a chargesheet against her in a disproportionate assets case.

A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices P Sathasivam and J M Panchal granted time to BSP supremo when her counsel submitted before the court that copy of the 12-page affidavit has been given to her only a week ago and she needed time to respond to it.

The CBI, in its affidavit, has submitted that there was sufficient evidence to proceed against Mayawati as she and her relatives have acquired assets beyond their known sources of income through corrupt means during her tenure as chief minister.

The agency had also alleged that the Chief Minister was trying to divert attention from the core issue to delay her prosecution in the case.

The BSP supremo had filed a petition in the apex court seeking to drop the proceedings against her in the case as according to her, the entire case was politically motivated. The UPA government has been using CBI as a tool to settle scores with their political opponents, she alleged.

A corruption case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against her for allegedly indulging in corruption to acquire assets. According to CBI, Mayawati and her family members were operating a large number of bank accounts and had many immovable properties in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
