SC stays death sentence of two Mumbai blast convicts The Supreme Court has stayed the death sentence awarded by the TADA court to Mushtaq Moosa and Asgar Yousuf – two other co-accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blast case, till it pronounces its final judgement. The apex court’s ruling comes three days after it stayed the capital punishment awarded to Zakir Hussain Noor Mohammed Shaikh, a death row convict in the 1993 Mumbai serial blast case. In its previous hearing the apex court also indicated granting bail to those, who have served half of their sentences in jail. Going by the reports, over 100 people have been convicted by the TADA court for their role in the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai. Almost all of them have filed petitions in the Supreme Court seeking a stay over their sentences and it seems that the apex court is staying their death sentences for a reassessment of the convicts’ role. On Friday, a bench of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan suspended Sheikh`s death penalty, while admitting his plea challenging the verdict of Mumbai`s anti terror court, which convicted him on charges of terrorism. According to reports, Sheikh had detonated a bomb in the Mahim fishermen`s colony in Mumbai, killing three people and injuring six others. On 29th February this year, the Supreme Court also granted bail to Yusuf Abdul Razak Memon, one of the main accused, on medical grounds. Yusuf Abdul Razak Memon was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings. A bench consisting of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Raveendran granted him bail till 14th July saying that it would review the medical condition of Memon, who is suffering from chronic schizophrenia, every three months before extending it.
