SC To Hear PIL On Scrapping Licences Of Striking Truckers 1/9/2009 The Supreme Court will hear on January 12, a PIL seeking directions to cancel the permits and licences of striking transporters if they do not call off their strike immediately. A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam fixed the date of hearing when the matter was mentioned for urgent hearing. Sunder Khatri, an advocate in his petition has alleged that the strike by transporters was causing tremendous hardships to the people at large and it amounted to holding the public to ransom. The strike by transporters across the country has virtually disrupted normal life and prices of essential commodities such as vegetable and fruits have gone up sharply. The Delhi government has already imposed Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to ensure that transporters in Delhi do not join the strike but it does not seem to have any impact on transporters, who are on strike for last four-five days in support of their demand for reducing the prices of diesel etc. The strike by the employees of oil companies have further aggravated the situation as the petrol pumps have gone dry. The petitioner has also prayed to the court to declare transporters strike illegal and direct them to call off their strike immediately. UNI
