44 women among 610 HC judges, RS told

There are 44 women among the 610 judges working in the 21 High Courts in the country, the Rajya Sabha was informed. Delhi High Court and Bombay High Court top the list with six women judges each, the law minister H R Bhardwaj said in a written reply. There is no provision for reservation for any caste or class of persons in appointment of judges of Supreme court and High courts which are made as per the Constitution, he said replying to a question whether the government is increasing the number of women judges in courts. He said the government has requested the Chief Justices of the High courts to locate women from the Bar who are suitable for appointment as High Court judges.
