Chennai: The city police on Tuesday arrested four key persons said to be behind the clashes that occurred at the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law College and hostel in the city on November 12. In another development, four law students surrendered at magistrate courts in Villupuram, Coimbatore and Egmore in connection with the November 12 incidents.
Deputy commissioner of police, Flower Bazaar, Prem Anand Sinha, said: “Marx alias Ravindran, Manimaran, Kubendran and Vetrikondan were arrested from a hide-out in Cuddalore on Tuesday by four special teams. Selvakumar of Thirukovilur surrendered at the Villupuram magistrate’s court, Velmurugan of Cuddalore surrendered at the VI metropolitan magistrate’s court in Egmore and Sivaraj of Pollachi and Meganathan of Kallakurichi in Villupuram district gave themselves up at a magistrate’s court in Coimbatore on Tuesday.”
According to police sources, Ravindran was involved in six, Manimaran in 10 and Vetrikondan in seven cases. Kubendran has six cases pending against him. “The top brass in the police commissioner’s office have assigned a senior officer to follow up the matter. We are planning to arrest the students in the previous pending cases before they get bail in this case,” an officer said.
The officer added Gopi, Sathyaraj and Manoj are to be arrested in connection with the case.
“We identified 20 students, apart from the eight arrested in Chennai after the incident, based on television footage of the incident. Under instructions from commissioner, K Radhakrishnan, 20 special teams were assigned to arrest each student. The teams went to various parts of the state after collecting the profile of each student,” an officer said.
