Hoteliers to move court against smoking ban

The Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), the apex body of all hotel associations, has decided to move court against the government''s proposal to ban smoking in public places. The Ministry of Health, under the Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rules, 2008, has banned tobacco consumption in all government or private buildings from October 2, including hotels, cafes, restaurants, schools, pubs or discotheques, stadia, airports, hospitals and bus stands. The hotel industry tried to apply for exemptions in some cases, claiming that their businesses could suffer but the central government held firm by rejecting the appeal, it was learnt. It is felt that the government's decision was a welcome move but the time given is very short. Hotels will not be in a position to take necessary steps including creating a separate closed space for smoking.
