The Gujarat High Court (HC) on Thursday upheld the Gujarat University Syndicate’s decision to cancel fee hike in Self-Financed Institutions (SFIs) offering BBA, BCA and B Com degree courses. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice K S Radhakrishnan and Justice A S Dave turned down a plea by the SFIs against the university’s decision taken on October 11. The Syndicate members had quashed the permission granted by the vice-chancellor to certain SFIs to raise their fee structures. After the Syndicate quashed the university’s decision allowing SFIs to hike fees, the colleges approached the High Court. It claimed the hike was essential for them particularly after the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations. Not moved by the argument of the SFIs, the court ordered these institutes to deposit the extra amount taken from the students towards fee in separate bank accounts.he court also asked the colleges to place on record information regarding their strength, laboratories, libraries and other facilities within a month.
