An unsigned e-mail from an unconfirmed source to a local advocate, urging him to join the Jehadi movement and promising monetary compensation to his family in eventuality of martyrdom, has been taken up by the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police.
Advocate of Gauhati High Court Ajay Hazarika had received an e-mail on October 15 with the subject line recruitment and training in Afghanistan.
He, however, opened the e-mail and found that it contained an appeal to believers to attend military training in Afghanistan and to continue the holy Jehad.
’After martyrdom, your families would be compensated with five million US dollars,’ the e-mail read, asking the recipient to contact the sender through e-mail or over telephone.
Hazarika, who is also a consumer rights activist, approached the STF with the e-mail and lodged a complaint.
STF sources said the matter was being pursued with utmost urgency and measures have already been initiated to locate the computer from where the e-mail had originated and trace the phone number.
The sources, however, refused to speculate on genuineness of the e-mail and said a thorough probe would be required to determine whether it was fake.
