Self defence and defending public

If I notice one or group of assassin trying to murder someone in public with knifes or some object, Is it legal for me to shot them all using licensed gun to protect the victim?

actually you can't shoot them because of your one silly mistake of shootig a person of the GROUP can put the hostage's life in danger but you can threat them if they do nor surrender then you can report them and ask your group for backup
