Obtaining documents from legal firm

Our landlord was a partner in a legal firm. All communication with the landlord was handled by his firm.

Now the landlord is deceased and all the documents are with the firm. The ownership of the legal firm has changed hands. As tenants we had a detailed communication about certain matters with the firm. Now that the landlord is deceased we as tenants would like to get copies of documents. What legal means do we have to obtain documents from the landlords firm ?
